988 Trust Fund Signed Into Law!

Legislation moves implementation of Maryland 988 forward

We are thrilled to report that the Maryland General Assembly passed and the Governor signed legislation assuring funding that will strengthen the Behavioral Health Crisis Response System Across Maryland in preparation for the July 16, 2022 launch of 988. This is a huge step to ensuring equitable, timely and effective mental health and substance use support across the state. Additional funding was also included in the state budget.

The budget and legislation

  • Establishes a 988 Trust Fund to support the Maryland 988 help line

  • Allocates $5 million for local helplines  in 2022 and

  • Deposits $5.5 million in the Trust Fund in 2023.

We thank our behavioral health champions: Sen. Malcolm Augstine, Sen. Delores Kelley, Sen. Guy Guzzone, Senate President Bill Ferguson, Speaker Adrienne Jones, Del. Karen Lewis Young, Del. Shane Pendergrass, Del. Joseline Pena-Melynk, and Del. Maggie McIntosh for their tireless leadership and support.
